Festivals always involve a large number of movements of travelling people and the transportation of goods. The following general types of travel & transport are identified:
Travel & transport is responsible for a major part of the total greenhouse gas emissions of festivals. To calculate these emissions, the emissions from company owned and rented vehicles for transport of people and goods, on and outside the festival site (including from purchased fuel) - is included in GHG Scope 1. The emissions from the travel of crew and volunteers, artists and audience, and the transportation of suppliers, is included in GHG Scope 3.
To define a circular and climate neutral festival for travel & transport, the concept of the Trias Mobilica (inspired by Trias Energetica) provides a basis to design an efficient travel and transportation model. This concept includes three elements to be considered in the festivals’ transport planning:
