De Zwarte Cross is al jaren een begrip als het gaat om muziek, spektakel en feest. Maar in 2024 was er meer aan de hand: het festival werd ook een proeftuin voor innovatieve wateroplossingen. Want droogte, watertekorten en waterkwaliteit zijn uitdagingen die ons allemaal raken – en festivals kunnen een bijzondere rol spelen als het gaat om circulaire oplossingen voor deze wateruitdagingen.

Waarom circulair water op festivals?
Water is essentieel voor een festival als de Zwarte Cross. Denk aan drinkwater, douches en toiletten. Maar dat water wordt steeds schaarser, zeker in droge zomers. En tegelijkertijd zijn er intensievere regenbuien door de klimaatcrisis, waardoor festivals steeds vaker kampen met wateroverlast. Niet alleen festivals staan voor deze uitdaging – maar de hele samenleving. Maatregelen om duurzaam en circulair om te gaan met water bieden een oplossing voor deze uitdagingen.

Tegelijkertijd vormen festivals de ideale testomgeving en een venster naar de samenleving. Ze bieden een unieke kans om innovaties te testen met veel mensen op één plek, binnen een beperkte tijd. Bovendien hebben ze een enorme communicatiekracht. Ze kunnen bewustzijn creëren bij een breed publiek en duurzame gedragsverandering stimuleren.

Daarom sloegen het Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat, Waterschap Rijn & IJssel, Waterschap Vechtstromen, Drinkwaterbedrijf Vitens, Gemeente Oost Gelre, de Samenwerking Water van de Regio Achterhoek+ en De Feestfabriek de handen ineen. Hun missie? Innovatieve oplossingen testen én doorontwikkelen om waterverbruik te minimaliseren, afvalwater hergebruiken en nieuwe methoden voor waterzuivering ontwikkelen. Deze samenwerking maakt tevens onderdeel uit van de Green Deal Circular Festivals, waarin ruim 50 festivals uit heel Europa hun krachten bundelen om circulair en klimaatneutraal te worden. 

Innovaties in actie
Tijdens de 2024 editie van Zwarte Cross,  18 tot en met 21 juli, werden acht slimme wateroplossingen getest:

• BluElephant: mobiele biologische afvalwaterzuivering.
• Silver Label Unit: produceert herbruikbaar water uit gemengd afvalwater.
• Grijswater Unit: zuivert douchewater voor toiletspoeling.
• Urinebehandeling: verwerkt urine tot water en meststoffen.
• Circular Flush: waterloze off-grid toiletten.
• Powershower: waterbesparende hogedrukdouche.
• Unisex urinoir: inclusieve toiletoplossing die grondstoffenwinning uit vrouwenurine mogelijk maakt.
• Concentraatbehandeling: verwijdert medicijn- en drugsresten uit opgeconcentreerd  afvalwater.

Daarnaast heeft onderzoek plaatsgevonden en is het publiek betrokken om aandacht te geven aan de wateropgaven en om inzicht te krijgen in het draagvlak voor de oplossingen. 

Wat hebben we geleerd?
De innovaties werkten, maar opschalen  blijft een uitdaging. Bufferoplossingen, zoals de inzet van mestzakken voor het gedoseerd lozen van afvalwater, bleken op dit moment nog het meest effectief om piekbelastingen op waterzuiveringsinstallaties op te kunnen vangen. Maar is die oplossing ook op de langere termijn afdoende en wenselijk? Bezoekers stonden open voor waterhergebruik, zolang het comfort niet in gevaar kwam. Daarnaast blijven juridische barrières – zoals regelgeving rondom hergebruik en lokaal lozen van gezuiverd afvalwater – een belangrijke uitdaging.

• Technisch haalbaar, maar opschaling nodig: Innovaties hebben aangetoond dat circulaire wateroplossingen technisch haalbaar zijn, maar verdere optimalisatie is nodig om te voldoen aan lozingsnormen en inzet op grote schaal.
• Draagvlak bij bezoekers: Bezoekers staan open voor waterbesparing en hergebruik, vooral wanneer het comfort niet wordt aangetast. Dit benadrukt het belang van gedragsverandering en publiekscommunicatie.
• Buffersystemen effectief: Mestzakken waren cruciaal om piekbelasting van afvalwater te voorkomen.
• Lokale wateroplossingen stuiten op juridische en operationele barrières: Innovaties zoals lokale lozing van gezuiverd water waren juridisch niet toegestaan, wat hun potentieel beperkte.
• Eerste stap naar een breder ecosysteem: Het project heeft bijgedragen aan kennisdeling en netwerkvorming, een belangrijke voorwaarde voor verdere opschaling.

Wat zijn de grootste lessen voor Evenementorganisatoren, Overheden, en Water- of innovatieorganisaties?

Evenementorganisatoren:

• Kansen: Duurzaam en circulair omgaan met water is noodzakelijk om de license to operate op termijn veilig te stellen: een basisvoorwaarde om een festival te kunnen organiseren. Circulaire wateroplossingen kunnen festivals helpen om te voldoen aan strengere regelgeving ( op gebied van waterkwaliteit, veiligheid en gezondheid) en tegelijkertijd hun om ambities voor verduurzaming realiseren. Denk aan waterbesparing via regenwateropvang en circulaire sanitatieoplossingen.
• Advies: Begin tijdig met het zoeken en inzetten van passende oplossingen voor het waterbeheer op het festival, zodat je niet te laat bent als puntje bij paaltje komt. Betrek bezoekers hier actief bij om ze mee te nemen in deze maatregelen die op termijn onontkoombaar zijn. 
   

Overheden:

• Kansen: Evenementen zijn een platform om circulaire technologieën zichtbaar te maken en maatschappelijk draagvlak te creëren.
• Advies: Faciliteer samenwerking tussen evenementen en lokale overheden en benut evenementen als ‘living labs’ voor bredere transities.
   

Water- of innovatieorganisaties:

• Kansen: Festivals bieden unieke testomgevingen om innovaties in de praktijk te valideren en te demonstreren.
• Advies: Versterk partnerschappen met evenementenorganisatoren en richt je op schaalbare oplossingen die ook buiten evenementen toepasbaar zijn.

Wat nu?
De lessen van de Zwarte Cross zijn waardevol – niet alleen voor festivals, maar ook voor gemeenten, andere sectoren en toekomstige evenementen. De partners werken nu aan een vervolgplan voor 2025 om de meest succesvolle innovaties verder op te schalen.

Festivals as a Testing Ground for Smart Water Solutions: Lessons from Zwarte Cross

For years, Zwarte Cross has been synonymous with music, spectacle, and celebration. But in 2024, the festival became something more: a testing ground for innovative water solutions. With drought, water shortages, and water quality becoming pressing challenges, festivals can play a unique role in advancing circular water solutions.

Why focus on water at festivals?
Water is essential for a festival like the Zwarte Cross—for drinking, showers, and toilets. But water is becoming increasingly scarce, especially during dry summers. At the same time, intense rainstorms caused by the climate crisis are leading to frequent waterlogging at festivals. These challenges are not unique to festivals—they affect society as a whole. Adopting sustainable and circular water practices offers a solution to these pressing issues.

Festivals also provide the perfect testing environment and a window into society. They offer a unique opportunity to trial innovations with large groups of people in a confined space over a limited time. Moreover, festivals have significant communication power, creating awareness among a broad audience and encouraging sustainable behavior changes.

This is why the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Rijn & IJssel Water Board, Vechtstromen Water Board, drinking water company Vitens, the Municipality of Oost Gelre, the Water Cooperation of the Achterhoek+ Region, and De Feestfabriek joined forces. Their mission? To test and develop innovative solutions to minimize water consumption, reuse wastewater, and explore new methods of water purification. This collaboration is also part of the Green Deal Circular Festivals, a partnership of over 50 festivals across Europe working towards becoming circular and climate-neutral.

Innovations in action
During the 2024 edition of Zwarte Cross, from July 18 to 21, eight water solutions were tested:

• BluElephant: mobile wastewater treatment.
• Silver Label Unit: produced reusable water from mixed wastewater.
• Greywater Unit: purified shower water for toilet flushing.
• Urine Treatment: processed urine into water and fertilizers.
• Circular Flush: waterless off-grid toilets.
• Powershower: water-saving high-pressure shower.
• Unisex Urinal: inclusive toilet solutions.
• Concentrate Treatment: removed medication and drug residues from wastewater.

An additional research was conducted, and the public was involved to raise awareness about water challenges and understand the acceptance of these solutions.

What did we learn?
The innovations worked, but scalability remains a challenge. Buffering solutions, such as using manure bags to temporarily store waste water, proved to be the most effective way to handle peak loads on water treatment plants. Visitors were open to water reuse, provided their comfort wasn’t compromised. Legal barriers—like regulations around water discharge—also remain a significant hurdle.

• Technically Feasible, but Scaling Needed: Circular water solutions are technically viable, but further optimization is required to meet discharge standards and enable large-scale implementation.
• Visitor Support: Festivalgoers are open to water-saving and reuse, especially when comfort is not compromised. This highlights the importance of behavior change and public communication.
• Effective Buffer Systems: Manure bags were crucial in preventing wastewater peak loads.
• Legal and Operational Barriers: Innovations like local discharge of treated water faced legal restrictions, limiting their potential.
• Foundation for a Broader Ecosystem: The project fostered knowledge sharing and networking, essential for further scaling.

Key Lessons for Event Organizers, Governments, and Water or Innovation Organizations

Event Organizers:

• Opportunities:Sustainable and circular water management is vital to securing the license to operate in the future—a basic requirement for organizing festivals. Circular water solutions help festivals comply with stricter regulations (on water quality, safety, and health) while achieving sustainability goals, such as water-saving via rainwater harvesting and circular sanitation solutions.
• Advice: Use events as testing grounds for new technologies and actively involve visitors in sustainability initiatives.

Governments:

• Opportunities: Festivals serve as platforms to showcase circular technologies and build societal support.
• Advice: Facilitate collaboration between festivals and local governments, leveraging events as ‘living labs’ for broader transitions.

Water and Innovation Organizations:

• Opportunities: Festivals provide unique environments to validate and demonstrate innovations in real-world conditions.
• Advice: Strengthen partnerships with event organizers and focus on scalable solutions applicable beyond festivals.

What’s next?
The lessons from Zwarte Cross are invaluable—not only for festivals but also for municipalities, other sectors, and future events. The partners are now working on a follow-up plan for 2025 to scale up the most successful innovations.
